When Logan and I were on our honeymoon in Hawaii we went searching for this little bean-to-bar chocolate shop, Madre. It was pouring. Buckets of rain were sloshing down and off of the curved rooftops in Honolulu city, pooling and draining through the streets. Parking there is a total wreck, so we sneakily parked in the Walmart lot (doesn't it hurt to think Walmart is taking up precious space on those islands?). We ran about ten blocks, avoiding the curtains of water coming down off of overhangs and just saying "fuck it" to puddles, which we couldn't avoid. But we got there, somehow pretty dry. And we did our research-gazing. That's where we go to bean-to-bar shops and scope how they're doing things. Madre is pretty awesome, very Hawaii. The make a bar with cacao fruit-pulp dried into fruit leather and sprinkled throughout their chocolate. Imagine dried mango/peach/pineapple dried into a fruit leather and doused in chocolate. That's what I'm talking about, flavor wise.

We walked out into the steamy streets (still pouring), taking it slow under whatever awnings we could find and sprinting to cross streets. What kind of body art would you get if you were to get anything? I asked Logan. We both agree tattoos aren't really our thing. And no concept or image really strikes either of us personally as worth seeing and displaying for the rest of forever.  I love a beautiful tattoo, though -- looking at them, talking about them. What if I got a line drawing of Theobromine? Logan said. That's the bitter alkaloid in chocolate that makes you feel all blissed out -- C₇H₈N₄O₂. It has a really pretty crystalline chemical structure.

And all I could think was Well, that's perfect.

And what if you got a halved avocado on your inner arm? He said. This is why Logan is the most perfect. Because it's true, I would actually get that tattoo and feel freaking great about it forever. Avocados and me? We're best food friends forever. BFFF. We both laughed about that for a bit, the tattoo thing. Mostly because, I mean, we're freaks like that. Some people get their lovers names tattoo'd onto themselves. Us? Chocolate and avocado.

I eat a variation on this fried egg, kraut, and avocado toast almost every day. Sometimes it's chia pudding for breakfast, yes. But mostly, it's this.

My recipe for this Fried Egg, Avocado, Kraut Toast (with the silkiest fried eggs you ever did eat) is over on Jewhungry!
