Hi! Wow time flies when you’re busy as hell. My schedule has been packed. I’ve been doing lots of client work (photography, recipe development). Plus I’ve been getting trained to teach chair yoga. I’ve been prepping with my band to launch a crowdfunding campaign in May. I helped put on another moon masquerade on Friday. And Logan has been pre-launching his chocolate and coffee company!!!! He’s now selling chocolate bars in about 5 shops (insert snoopy dance, jazz hands, and fireworks!!!).
I also spent a few days this past week in Norfolk modeling for Nellie Rose Textiles, a hand-made and hand-painted silk clothing brand that I’m obsessed with!
It was a really special and dreamy experience, as Nellie and I have been friends for years and I have watched her work grow and shift from afar (she lives in West Virginia). She’s a traditionally trained shibori silk artist and hand-dyes everything with plant-based dyes. Recently she’s expanded into more playful work, hand-painting dyes onto raw silk, designing and making simple constructions one piece at a time. Anyway, I’m hopeful that I’ll get to share some of the photos my friend Kelsie took with you soon.
In other news, some of you may have seen that I dyed my hair lavender! It’s quite fun, although it will fade in a few weeks to icy blonde. Right now I feel like a Nordic cotton candy unicorn princess. INTO IT.
I have a simple and sweet recipe for you guys today. It’s an update of my #1 most popular blog post, my watermelon coconut water aloe juice. It’s perfect for hot days, and just generally amazing for rehydrating. When it truly starts to warm up, I make this at least once a week all season long. I can’t live without it.
The original recipe was so simple, just watermelon blended with coconut water — and you could add fresh aloe juice if you had it on hand for extra groovy healing vibes.
This updated version has more bite and balance, featuring whole lemon & lime fruit, fresh strawberries and a tiny pinch of salt. It’s sweet, tangy and so fresh. The strawberries give the drink a subtle berry note, while the salt amps up the drinks natural sweetness.
It’s just as easy as the original. Just chop up that watermelon and throw everything into a blender, give it a blend and sip until your heart’s content!
In the depth of Summer I love to blend this watermelon-ade with ice so it has more of a slushy quality. Then I pop it into a hydro flask to keep it icy cold for hours. I plan on doing tons of gardening this year, so this recipe is perfect to have on hand to entice me into consuming liquids as I work.
If I’m being honest, I make this year round if I can find good watermelons. I’ve had many days during the Spring that I have become dehydrated (I forget to drink water when I have a lot of projects I’m working on). I need this drink around. Plain and simple.
Oh, and some ideas for mixing it up and getting playful with this recipe: you could sub your favorite berry for the strawberries. I think blackberries would be stunning. Raspberries or blueberries would also be great. Kiwi would be fabulous! I want to try this with a small handful of fresh basil blended in. You might also try adding a teaspoon of rosewater or a few sprigs of fresh thyme or mint.
