I put sprinkles on my milkshake! And bee pollen too!

Why? Well, most importantly, because pretty.

But ultimately I just wanted a simple, sweet, chocolately milkshake topped with sparkly things … with a secret.

And that secret is that this dessert is good for you. Like, really really really good for you.

Because I put maca in it!

Why put maca in your dessert? Good question. Although maca has a pleasant soft caramel flavor, we’re really adding it into our milkshake because it gives us super powers.

Maca is adaptogenic. Meaning it promotes homeostasis in the body. Adaptogens are characterized by the ability to stabilize physiological processes. Maca, for example, helps regulate hormone production (although maca itself doesn’t contain hormones). So for a condition like adrenal fatigue, maca acts on the hypothalamus and pituitary glands (which regulate the adrenal glands). Maca gets the hypothalamus and pituitary glands producing more or less hormones as needed to bring the adrenals back into homeostasis.

That’s pretty wild.

Oh, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg with maca!

As an adaptogen maca works on the hormonal, cardiovascular and nervous systems. It’s particularly well known for its affect on improving libido and fertility. But it’s also known for decreasing stress and anxiety, improving adrenaline function, improving utilization of glucose for energy, improving blood pressure and iron levels, and creating a general sense of well being.

Maca is my adaptogen of choice lately. Personally, I find that it works to improve my energy levels and promotes a sense of calm clarity.

From a culinary perspective it’s extremely versatile, with a mild flavor similar to butterscotch. I usually blend it into smoothies or add it to oatmeal. I’ve even been known to add it to cake batter! I know. I’m that hippie babe.

But, really, it doesn’t get better than a creamy, chocolate milkshake boosted with super powered maca to convince your friends (and yourself!) that healthy is delicious!

Oh and I sprinkled that bee pollen on top just to kick it up even more with healing, nourishing magic powers. Bee pollen is one of the only foods on the planet with everything you need to live. A complete amino acid (protein) profile, raw enzymes, phytonutrients, vitamins, minerals, trace minerals! Dang this stuff is amazing!

You don’t have to add bee pollen to the top of your milkshake. That’s just my personal preference. Sprinkles alone are totally acceptable ;)

This is the kind of recipe that crushes doubts about if dairy-free or plant-based living is restrictive. Um, yeah, I’m gonna go with definitely not. Nothing better than a 5 minute recipe that makes you go holy maca balls this sh*t is good!

Dairy Free Maca Chocolate Milkshake (Vegan)

Created by Renee on July 1, 2016

Use more or less almond milk to your liking! 1.5 cups almond milk results in a liquid milkshake. For more of a thick “frosty” texture, use less milk.

  • Prep Time: 5m
  • Serves: 1

Ingredients

  • 2 scoops vegan coconut ice cream
  • 1 banana
  • 1 1/2 cups unsweet almond milk
  • 2 dates
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
  • 3/4 tablespoon maca powder
  • pinch salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • sprinkles
  • bee pollen

Instructions

  1. Add everything except for the sprinkles and bee pollen to the bowl of a high powered blender. Blend until smooth and the dates are totally incorporated.
  2. Pour into your serving glass and top with sprinkles and bee pollen (both are totally optional of course!). Enjoy!
